Dubbed “the mad scientist” by her students, Vanessa Mártir has led hundreds of writers through the journey of writing personal essays and memoir via her Writing Our Lives Workshop, which she teaches in NYC and soon, online. She has also worked one-on-one with writers, helping them find their voices and dig into their lives to uncover the stories they need to write, in whatever form they choose–nonfiction, fiction or poetry.
Six years ago, Vanessa left a fulltime editing job to live the writer/writing teacher life. She has published a novel (Woman’s Cry, Augustus Publishing 2007) and her essays and short stories have been published in the VONA anthology, Dismantle, The Butter, Poets & Writers, Kweli Journal, and Smokelong Quarterly, among others. She has served as guest editor for The James Franco Review and Aster(ix) Journal.
