Volunteer for Bindercon LA


BinderCon LA is a big event, and we rely on the help of dedicated volunteers to make sure our speakers, attendees, and scholarship recipients have a great experience. Our volunteers believe in our mission to advance the careers of women and gender variant writers, and want to give back to the community by lending a hand at the event. Volunteers commit to working one full day (8 hours) at the conference, and can attend the other day at no charge. Breakfast and lunch is provided both days. All volunteers are required to attend a mandatory orientation from 7 – 9:00 pm,Thursday, March 30 (exact location in Los Angeles TBA). Volunteers will also need to provide their own transportation to UCLA (parking in the garage is $12/day).

Our organizing staff will help match volunteers with roles that suit their interests, experience, and aspirations. Volunteer roles include:

Escorts (meet speakers at the VIP registration table and escort them to the green room or breakout room; serve as buddies for disabled or visually impaired attendees who need assistance getting between venues and/or reading signage; help attendees locate and utilize our quiet room and lactation room)

Social media team (live tweeting panels and workshops; interacting with attendees on social media; tracking and collecting trending hashtags)

Registration team (a seated role interacting with attendees and providing their name badges and tote bags; answering questions about programming, amenities like washrooms, and receiving complaints and compliments from attendees)

Room ushers (handling microphone for audience Q&A; liaison between speakers and AV crew; checking attendees off registration list for certain rooms that have limited attendance capacity; helping speed pitch participants locate the agent or editor they are scheduled to meet with)

Q) If I volunteered last year, do I still have to attend the orientation meeting?
A) Yes, we require all volunteers to attend, even if they’ve volunteered for us in the past.

Q) I live out of town. Can I Skype into the orientation meeting?
A) Because the meeting is structured to go over specific volunteer shifts in small groups, we require everyone attend in person.

Q) If I volunteer, does that mean I get to attend the conference?
A) As a volunteer (who will work one full day, either Saturday or Sunday), you’ll receive free admission to the conference, which includes morning refreshments, lunch on both days, and a happy hour on Sunday; however, volunteers are not eligible for speed pitch and VIP party or VIP perks.

Please note that some panels and workshops have a limited capacity, and may be full by the time you receive your volunteer shift assignment. If you would like to participate in speed pitching or VIP ticket perks (priority registration for workshops and speed pitch, plus a Saturday night party), we recommend purchasing a ticket to the conference and joining us as one of our attendees!
