2 Thumbs Down: The Lack of Female Voices in Film Criticism
Monica Castillo, Li Lu, Lindsay Nahmiache, Amy Nicholson, Claudia Puig
The lack of female critics writing for major outlets has limited the kinds of stories that receive the limelight from general audiences. Gendered, biased reviews have negatively affected reception and revenue for both studio and indie films made by or starring women, propelling the falsehood there is no demand for such films. With the number of established outlets for film criticism dwindling, many have taken to the blogosphere to voice their opinions. In an age where anyone with a website can be called a critic, how can filmmakers get their work seen by qualified critics that may respond to their work, and how can critics find focus to sift past bigger studio films to promote smaller films that need attention? How can we, as audience members, uplift and give power to more female voices in criticism?
Join a panel of filmmakers, critics, and publicists as they discuss the disparity in criticism and the effects it has on a film’s potential audience.
