Naomi Jackson

Author, The Star Side of Bird Hill

Naomi Jackson’s novel, The Star Side of Bird Hill, tells the story of two Brooklyn girls sent home to Barbados after their mother can no longer care for them. The book addresses the sexual awakening of the older girl, Dionne, their mother’s work as a nurse during the AIDS crisis in New York, and their mother’s best friend’s struggles as an out gay man in 1980s Barbados. Jackson is interested in writing about sexuality ‘sideways’, writing characters’ sexuality as an integral, but not necessarily the most interesting, element of their personalities and the development of their stories.
